Recovering your data using the Datamax folder
If you are reading this then now would be a good time to give you a lecture on
backups. Please read
this
before continuing. The quickest, easiest and most reliable way to recover
from any kind of data loss (including theft of your computer) is to restore from
backups. This article will provide a possible solution if you do NOT have
a backup.
Please note that this solution should be carried out by a person with a high
degree of technical knowledge. Also, this solution should only be
attempted on a computer that does NOT have Panacea installed on it.
When Panacea is installed a folder (called "Datamax") is created in your
Program Files folder. If you have a copy of this folder then this
solution may work.
Follow these steps carefully:
- If the Datamax folder does not already exist on your hard drive
(for example, if it is on a flash drive) then copy it into your \Program
Files folder. Note that if the Datamax folder originally existed
in your \Program Files (x86) folder then you may need to create a
folder called \Program Files (x86) and copy the Datamax folder
there instead.
- Using Windows Explorer navigate to the MySql\MySql Server
5.1\bin folder and double-click mysqld.exe to execute it.
- Using Windows Explorer navigate to the Panacea
folder and double-click Panacea.exe to execute it.
- With some luck Panacea will now execute. Log on in the normal way.
- Check that Panacea is running normally (i.e. no error messages) and immediately
make a backup (File - Backup on the menu). Make sure this
completes successfully.
- Log out of Panacea.
- Reboot the computer. This will stop MySQL running.
- Rename the Datamax folder discussed in step 1 to, for example, "OldDatamax".
- Install Panacea from the installer. This can be downloaded from
www.panacea.co.za
.
- Run Panacea and answer NO if asked if you want to add a practice or
import your Panacea 6.3e data.
- Restore from your backup (System - Manage Database - Restore from backup
on the menu).
You should now have a correctly installed copy of Panacea with the data
restored.
