Defaults
A default is a setting that is used by Panacea if the user does
not specify a setting. Panacea implements defaults in a hierarchy which
means that the user only has to deal with "exceptions" and can usually leave
fields on their default setting. An example will illustrate
better:
In medical billing it is common for a practice to decide on a pricelist to use
when charging medical aid patients, e.g. NHRPL rates. However, certain
medical aids may pay a different rate. For example, medical aids
administered by Discovery may be charged at the Discovery rate. So in this
scenario Discovery is an "exception".
To implement the above Panacea could be configured (at a practice level) to
charge the NHRPL rate for medical aid patients. In general, you would
leave the
funder's pricelist
field on default. However, in the case of Discovery you may
set it to Discovery Health Rate, which would result in all
patients on Discovery being charge the Discovery Health Rate.
In general settings will exist on three levels: account,
funder and practice. Panacea will first look at the
account, then the funder, then the practice. For example, when deciding
which pricelist to use Panacea will look to see if you have set it on the
patient's account. If not (i.e. it is set to default)
Panacea will look at the patient's funder. If it is not set there then
Panacea will look at the setting on the practice.
You should not be tempted to configure all settings just because you are unsure
of how the defaults work. For example, when adding an account you may feel
that it is "safer" to specify what pricelist to use rather than leaving it on
default. Setting each and every item will result in a lot of
wasted time. It is also much more prone to error. For example, you
would always have to remember to charge the Discovery rate on Discovery
accounts.
In general, therefore, it is better to trust Panacea's defaults. Only
override the default when dealing with exceptions.
